Labor Day Weekend in Blue Ash

Ahhhh....love these long weekends. Ben was in Indiana for work last week and then came to Cinci for the weekend. Though I had to work on a presentation, we still got out and did a little exploring.

Saturday was sunny, but not too hot, a perfect day to go to the park. We went for a walk and fed the ducks some old bread I had, then we walked for a bit further and saw the sign that said we weren't supposed to feed the ducks, oops. Next, while driving along the road, we saw what I thought would be a Cincinnati gift store, since that was what they called themselves. We decided to stop and take a look. So I expected a store with the typical postcards, keychains, etc. of Cincinnati. When we walked in, it was an explosion of knicknacks, figurines, and a ton of Christmas stuff! And nothing Cincinnati related. What a let down. Guess we actually have to venture into the city of Cinci to find stuff like that. We will one of these days. It is just too easy to explore the north side of town because it doesn't involve much driving.

After the very short stop at the gift store, we were still driving around when we saw a cute ice cream shop in a little square. We didn't really feel like straight ice cream, so we shared a root beer float and relaxed on some park benches just outside of the store.

Sunday we felt like some BBQ in the spirit of Labor Day weekend. Since our grill is in Columbus, the decision to go out was made for us. Ben diligently looked up a couple of options and we were off, but when we arrived, we found out that both places were closed! How sad, so we ended up at a restaurant called O'Charley's where Ben was determined have BBQ and ordered ribs, but they really didn't have any other BBQ options, so I ordered a parmesan chicken sandwich. All the food was mediocre, I think we had gotten our hopes up for good BBQ. Though lunch was unimpressive, we ordered the cinnamon sugar doughnuts on a whim, and were pleasantly surprised at the warm, fresh, delightful dessert.

After lunch we were quite full and decided to walk off a bit of our heavy meal at Babies R Us. This was the first excursion for the two of us. It was quite overwhelming, even though we made a game plan to skip clothes, feeding, and bath accessories and focus on the big things like strollers, cribs, carseats, and other furniture. It was an educational visit to see what is available out there and to compare the different models and features, since both of us are pretty clueless on baby equipment. I've done a lot of babysitting in the past, but never had to do any kind of shopping for baby stuff. Ben was interested in the technical features of everything, dimensions of the cribs, and how things would need to be assembled. Here is a picture of him wearing a baby carrier, it suits him well! We weren't looking for anything in particular, and models might change in the months to come, so we'll figure out specifics at that time. But we did learn a bit more about how the various equipment was put together, how they were stored or folded up, and what we thought we would really need, and the items we could skip. Oh yeah, and everything is really expensive! So with the advice of a few of our friends who have been through it, we'll be checking out craigslist and garage sales too.

Today we went for dim sum round two. It was quite good last time, and there were a couple dishes we had wanted to try at the previous visit, but were unable. This time we actually ordered a couple of dishes off the main menu as well: the house pan-fried noodles, hot and sour soup, and gai-lan. We also had short ribs in black bean sauce, shrimp spring rolls, and a repeat of the ham sui gok because it's one of Ben's favorites. There are some leftovers for dinner tonight, can't wait.
