First things first, I am now a doctor! After four long, fast, excruciating, fun, crazy, amazing, difficult, exciting, stressful, interesting, awesome years, I'm an optometrist!
I've started work as the resident optometrist at Cincinnati Eye Institute, and have already gotten one month under my belt. It's a wonderful place to work. Huge too! Every ocular disease specialty one could dream of. Everyday I am learning something new as well as solidifying my clinical skills. For you eye people out there here is a smattering of some of the pathology I have seen: ruptured globe, Boston keratoprosthesis, aniridia, detached DSEK floating in the anterior chamber, erosions through tube shunt patch grafts, crazy snowbanking from pars planitis, fungal keratitis, trauma from a bottle rocket, trauma from alkali burn, trauma from a tree branch...etc. (Enough eye talk everyone else? =) I can't help it, I love eyeballs! It isn't all intense ocular disease though, I see plenty of patients who are doing well in follow up care.
Here is a typical schedule of my week:
| Mon | am: Neuro-ophthalmology |
| pm: Retina | |
| Tues | am: Cornea/Ant Seg |
| pm: General Optometry | |
| Wed | am: Post-ops |
| pm: Cataract consults | |
| Thur | am: Cornea/Ant Seg |
| pm: General Optometry | |
| Fri | am: Glaucoma |
| pm: Uveitis/Inflammatory disease |
Ben and I haven't gotten much chance to explore the Cincinnati area. I got sick right after graduation, and though I was well enough to work during the week, I just didn't feel up to exploring on the weekends. We definitely plan to check out more of the city in the months to come.
